Adani Green Energy Becomes First Indian Renewable Energy Company to Cross 20 GW Operational Capacity

Adani Green Energy Limited has become the first renewable energy company in India to surpass 20 GW of operational renewable energy capacity through greenfield development. The milestone strengthens India's clean energy transition, with major investments in solar, wind, hybrid power, and large-scale battery energy storage supporting its ambitious 50 GW target by 2030.

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has become the first renewable energy company in India to surpass 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity, achieving the landmark primarily through greenfield development. The milestone marks a significant advancement in India's clean energy transition and reinforces the company's position as the country's largest renewable energy developer.

According to the company, AGEL now generates more than 52 billion units of clean electricity annually, accounting for nearly three per cent of India's total electricity consumption. The achievement highlights the growing contribution of renewable energy to the nation's power sector while strengthening long-term energy security.

Commenting on the milestone, Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, said that surpassing 20 GW demonstrates what disciplined execution and long-term vision can accomplish. He stated that AGEL, supported by its efficient workforce and longstanding partners, now supplies renewable electricity nearly equivalent to the combined annual power requirements of Mumbai and New Delhi, reinforcing India's energy security while accelerating the country's clean energy transition.

The announcement comes after Sagar Adani addressed the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue during London Climate Action Week at The Science Museum in London last month. During the event, he stressed the need to accelerate electrification through renewable energy integrated with large-scale energy storage to enhance energy security, improve affordability, and ensure reliable, round-the-clock clean power.

AGEL achieved the milestone within a decade of commissioning its first renewable energy project at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016. The company described the accomplishment as India's largest and fastest greenfield renewable energy capacity addition.

During the financial year 2025-26, AGEL added 5,051 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity, representing the highest annual renewable capacity addition by any company outside China.

The company's operational renewable energy portfolio currently consists of approximately 14.2 GW of solar power capacity, 2.7 GW of wind power capacity, and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid capacity. In addition, AGEL has commissioned 3.55 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), representing the world's largest deployment outside China and one of the fastest such installations globally.

Emphasising the importance of energy storage, Sagar Adani said that as renewable energy assumes a larger share of India's electricity mix, battery storage is becoming central to delivering reliable and dispatchable clean power.

Looking ahead, AGEL plans to add 10 GWh of battery storage during the financial year 2026-27 and expand its battery storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years. The expansion will support the company's target of achieving 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The next phase of AGEL's expansion is centred on Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat, where the company is developing the world's largest renewable energy plant. The project is expected to play a crucial role in advancing India's renewable energy ambitions while strengthening the country's transition towards a sustainable and secure energy future.
